Ariella Arida Was Surprised!

MANILA – Ariella Arida, the Philippines’ bet to the upcoming Miss Universe pageant, said she was touched when her father decided to use his retirement pay just so they can fly to Russia next month to watch her compete.

“Nabigla ako when they both told me na manonood sila sa Russia live with my sister. Nakaka-touch. My father is a retired teacher and dati sinasabi namin na 'yung pera niya sa retirement, we want to put up a business. Pero hindi nila ginawa tapos that money, 'yun ang gagamitin nila to fly to Russia,” Arida told Charlene Gonzales in an interview on “The Buzz” on Sunday.

Since her parents discouraged her to join beauty pageants when she was younger, Arida said their decision means a lot to her.

“I’m so happy na doon gagamitin ng father ko ang pera niya para makita nila ako live,” she said.

The Laguna beauty, meanwhile, assured Filipinos that she will do her best as she represents the country in this year’s Miss Universe pageant.

While she feels pressured because of the consecutive wins of the Philippines in various beauty pageants, Arida said she will just use this as her motivation to bring home the crown.

“From the start nandoon na ang pressure, nung time pa nila Venus (Raj), Shamcey (Supsup) and Janine (Tugonon). Nung ako 'yung nanalo, nandoon na ang pressure. Ngayon tine-take ko na lang na positive lahat. Gagawin ko na lang na inspiration, motivation,” she said.

With just a little over a month until the much anticipated competition in November, Arida is hoping her fellow Filipinos will rally behind her just like in the previous years with Raj, upsup and Tugonon -- who all finished in the Top 5.

She also asked Filipinos to vote for her online to secure a spot in the competition’s top 15.

Arida is set to fly to Moscow, Russia on October 21. The pageant will be held on November 9.

Let’s do a Q&A with Ariella and how she fares with famous questions thrown at contestants in some international contests.

• What part of your body would you like to change? (To Melanie Marquez, 1979 Miss International, who said she didn’t want any part changed because she liked “my long-legged.”)

Ariella: I believe that God created us and made us all unique and special. I believe that God made us the way we are, and we are all beautiful in our own ways. My body is a gift from God. I love it and I do not want to change anything about it.

• What is the essence of being a woman? (To India’s Sushmita Sen, 1994 Miss Universe.)

Ariella: The essence of being a woman is her sexuality. It is in her ability to procreate. It is in her ability to give a life and in her role of nurturing children who are the hope of future generations.

• If you had one million dollars what would you do with it? (To Margie Moran, 1973 Miss Universe.)

Ariella: I would be very wise with my spending and save the money, and allocate part of my winnings to my chosen advocacy.

• What is the one lesson you learned as a child that still affects your life today? (To Japan’s Riyo Mori, 2007 Miss Universe.)

Ariella: As a child, I was always taught to dream but work hard to reach it. This fueled me to value education, to finish my studies and be successful in all the things that I do.

• Would you change your religion to marry the person you love? Why or why not? (To Shamcey Supsup, 2011 Miss Universe third runner-up.)

Ariella: I will not change my religion. When you love, it is all about understanding and respect. The man I will marry should respect my religion because it is a part of who I am.

• What is one big mistake in your life and what did you do to make it right? (To Venus Raj, 2010 Miss Universe fourth runner-up.)

Ariella: For me, one big mistake in my life is not being affectionate with my parents. It is a sad reality that most people today are so focused on careers and other pursuits and fail to show appreciation for their parents who unconditionally love and support them. Realizing this, I now express my love for them more often.

Interview with Ghune Katigbak, Ariella Arida's Mentor

I am very lucky to have known Ghune Katigbak. He is behind the successes of many talents. He was the handler of no less than Ariella Arida, our representative to Miss Universe 2013, when she was still starting at Binibing Laguna. JM Nazareth, Hari ng CALABARZON 2013, is also under his stable. He seems to have made a strong presence in Philippine pageantry today. Ladies and gentlemen, let us get to know Ghune Katigbak.

PAANO MO NADISCOVER SI ARIELLA ARIDA?

Hhhmmm…I was working sa isang fashion designer sa San Pablo. Bet nung designer na un si Ara. Kilala nya si Ara kaso di nya alam kung taga san at kung anu number. Pinahanap sakin ang bahay at number, nakuha ko naman tapos pina-meet ko dun sa designer. Tapos kinuhamg model model pag may mga events. Nagkaaway kami nung designer, umalis ako, sakin sumama si Ara. Tapos simula nung umalis ako sa designer nap o, sabi ko isasali ko sya ng Binibining Laguna. Don nag simula ang lahat sa amin ni Ara.

PAANO MO SIYA NAPAPAYAG NA SUMALI SA BB. LAGUNA?

Actually at first ok sa kanya pero nap o nya sure kung papayagan sya ng parents nya kasi she is still in school that time. Still, I went to their housed and asked permission from her parents. But I was rejected kasi gusto nila makatapos muna si Ara. Then after a year ga-grad na si Ara sabi ko tara Sali na tyo.. I trained her kahit nap  kami nagpaalam kasi baka maudlot na naman. Besides ga-grad na sya that time.

SO WHAT WHAT HER PARENTS’ REACTION WHEN THEY FOUND OUT ARA IS JOINING BB. LAGUNA?

Sabi lang nila ah ah si JUN talagang nap  tinigilan si Ara…pumayag na din kasi pinaalam na namin nung official candidate na si ara ng Bb. Laguna pageant last 2011. Sabi ko sa mommy nya “Ma’am Ethel bawal mag back out kase pumirma po kami na pag nag back out we have to pay 25K.” Kaya wala na nagawa pumayag na, pati sa Miss Earth takas na lang din kami.

SO WHAT HAPPENED IN BB. LAGUNA?

During Bb. Laguna 2011, medyo mahirap ang labanan, mas competitive, kasi yan ung 1^st year ng Miss Laguna during Gov ER’s time… kaya halos lahat ng kandidata winnable talaga. Top 10 lang si Ara that time. Bb. Laguna si Goldy baroas (who became a Binibining Pilipinas candidate in 2012).  Tapos 3^rd title si Mercigrace Raquel kalaban ni Ara ngayon last Bb. Pilipinas.

ANO SA TINGIN MO ANG DAHILAN AT HINDI SIYA NANALO DOON SA BB. LAGUNA?

ANONG KULANG?

Di siya nanalo kasi masyado ako nagtiwala kay nap o q n a. Kasi during our trainings she keep on telling me na kaya na nya nun.. alam na nya un…which is alam naman talaga nya klaso di naman natutukan ung tamang pag sagot. Ung beauty queen style ba, ung tipoing may mga I BELIEVE that…hahaha. tsaka naisip ko na din that time na siguro aalm na nga ni ara yun kase UP grad naman siya eh. Yun ang mali namin.

WHAT ARE HER STRENGTHS? WHAT ARE HER WEAKNESSES?

Weakness ni Ara??? Hhmmm,,, di ko masasabi kung anu at kung talagang meron…kasi ung strengths nya motivated siya sa lahat ng bagay. Na kahit di niya kaya, gagawin nya kasi kailangan nya gawin. At infainess kay Ara lahat ng mga pinapagawa at trainings namin nagawa naman nya. Madali niya kasi ma- embrace at ma-absorb ang mga bagay na dapat nyang gawin.

TELL US ABOUT HER EXPERIENCE IN MISS EARTH PHILIPPINES?

During Miss Philippines Earth, walk in lang kami nun. First time ko din magdala ng candidate sa national pageant. Luckily she passed the screening at sya ang candidate number 1 kase alphabeticaly arranged. Mahirap, kasi ramdam namin na may mag special treatment kitang kita mo kung kaninu sila pabor. Pinag-uusapan ng mga girls kung sino yung mga candidates na gusto iangat ng mga andun… not the organizers… basta naka ramdam kami ng POLITIKA in terms of pageant. Ang hirap pag walang naghahawak sau na taga Manila.

SINO ANG TUMULONG SA INYO PARA MAKASURVIVE SA SCREENING SA MISS PHILIPPINES EARTH?

We went to Carousel as walk in talaga. Walang tumulong sa amin. As in lahat sariling sikap. Hirap nong time na yon kasi Ara was working, halos kaka-start lang nya kaya tutol na naman ang Mommy niya, hehehehe. Kaso, wala na uli magawa kasi usapan namin ni Ara talo o panalo sa Miss Laguna, mag-Miss Philippines Earth talaga kami.

SHE WAS NOTICED IN MISS PHILIPPINES EARTH BUT STILL SHE DID NOT WIN.

HOW WILL YOU ASSESS HER PERFORMANCE IN THAT PAGEANT?

In fairness mukhang she was noticed naman talaga. Ramdam ko din yon. Siguro one major reason why she did not win kasi she went to Malaysia for their scheduled tour with her friends. At sabi kasama daw pala sa scoring ung mga challenges, like cooking challenge, catwalk challenge, make up challenge. May nagsabi daw sa kanya that she ranked 12. Sabi ko kahit pa 11 ka, talo pa din tayo. Sa pagkatalo naman namin sa Miss Philippines Earth dun nagsimula ang pag-iisip namin in joining Binibining Pilipinas 2013.

HOW DID YOU ACCEPT HER DEFEAT IN MISS PHILIPPINES EARTH?

Tanggap naman kasi in fairness bongga naman ung set of winners. Besides ramdam na din namin na sila yung mga mananalo. Kaya keri lang.

DO YOU HAVE DISAGREEMENTS AT TIMES?

Ay wala naman ganun. Kase pag may make up ako na pinapagawa sa kanya nun pinag uusapan muna namin ng make up artist kung ano talaga yung para sa mukha nya during Miss Laguna.  At tsaka sa mga damit naman sponsor ng Miss Laguna din. Sa MPE naman sponsor din ang make up. Ang gown naman ok din kasi dala namin lahat ng gamit. At in fairness kay Ara walang reklamo yan kahit ano ipasuot mo, isusuot nyan.

HOW DID ARA DEAL WITH BASHERS?

ANO RIN REACTION MO SA MGA BASHERS?

Deadma, as in totally deadma. Kase kung papatulan naman nya yun wala din naman maitutulong un sa kanya. To think during Binibini days, pinag babawalan sila mag- fb, mag twitter pero tuloy lang si Ara kasi never nya pinatulan ang mga ganun.. kahit anung pinaka masamang salita at pinaka masakit na salita pwede nila ibato kay Ara yun nga lang wala sila mapapla.. ganun sya tsaka ganun din ang turo ko sa kanya. Kasi at the end of the day si Ara pa din ang gagawa ng ikakatuwa ng mga taong naniniwala sa kanya.

DO YOU VISIT MISSOSOLOGY?

Uy nag vivisit ako sa misso! May isang pageant site lang kami na di bet. Namumukod-tangi silang bastos as in inedit pa pic ni Ara na naka 2 piece nung coronation at mas pinalaki ang tiyan…DUN AKO NAPA REACT.

ITO NA BA ANG PINAKAMASAKIT NA BASH TUNGKOL KAY ARA?

Di naman masakit. Nakakainis lang na talagang nag effort na palakihin ung tiyan na para pag tawanan. Di nila naisip na ang pinag tatawanan doon ay hindi lang si Ara kundi siya din kasi Pilipino din sya.

 

PAANO NAPUNTA SI ARA TO JONAS GAFFUD OF ACES?

After MPE, paglabas namin ng hall may mga lumalapit na samin that they are interested with nap o Miss World 2012, Binibini, kaso sabi ko wag na muna nya pansisin kasi mag pahinga muna sya kasi nakakapagod din ang MPE. Then sabi ko sa kanya di naman sya pang Miss World, ayoko naman na magjoin sya sa Mutya. Sabi ko ang paghandaan nya ay Binibining Pilipinas. Kasi sabi nap o Ara she will be turning 24 na, if ever this will be her last pageant na. Kaya paghandaan nya ang Binibini. Kaso sabi nya mag jo-join lang siya ng Binibini kung Jonas Camp sya. Kaya I tried to find a way paano kami mapapansin ni Mr. Jonas Gaffud o ni Mama J. I keep on sending Ara’s pic sa fb ni Mama J.  Deadma talaga kami. I asked hello na rin with Tito Boyeth Blas para kunin si Ara ng Aces and Queens. Then one time, I got a message from fb asking about Ara. Ayun na, dun na nagsimula ang lahat. Kinuha na si Ara ng Aces and Queens.

WHAT IS IN JONAS CAMP NA WALA SA KATIGBAK CAMP?

Hahahahah, change question naman. Kasi wala pa naman talagang KATIGBAK CAMP. Please…ayoko mag claim. I’m just using GK Kings and Queens para lang may maitawag ako sa mga alaga ko. Hehehehe.

HAHAHAHAHAHA. ITO NA LANG, WHY IS IT NECESSARY FOR

BEAUTY QUEENS TO BE A MEMBER OF ACES?

Sa tingin ko, it is not necessary to be part of the Aces and Queens pero i could say ay laki ng advantage mo pag Aces ka because they really train future beauty queens. Kase kita at alam ng mga taga Aces kung anu ang tamang gagawin sa kanilang kandidata. Alam nila kung paano papalabasin ang sinasabing X-FACTOR.

PERO MIND YOU, BEFORE JONAS IN THE LIFE OF ARA, THERE WAS GHUNE.

DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF A BEAUTY-QUEEN MAKER?

Ikaw ha.. nakakhiya pag sinagot ko to. Baka sabhin I was claiming. Hahahaha.  Pero sge ill answer na lang.

ANO KA BA, PARANG UNA KANG NAGING AKIN LANG ANG PEG.

I  could say yes. Siguro naman in some way nakaka kita din ang ng may potential winners ma lalake man o mababae.. Personaly nararamdaman ko kasi kung may ibubuga ang isang talent o wala. Patayuin mo pa lang ang isang modelo ramdam mo na that someday she/he will get a title. So sa tingin ko, I can consider my self that I have the eye for the potential KINGS and QUEENS.

FOR ME, YOU ARE A JONAS GAFFUD IN THE MAKING. WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT THAT?

Super idol ko si Mama J. Ayoko ma compare sa kanya kase Jonas Gaffud is Jonas Gaffud. Given a chance, I want to build my own name. Ang laki ng impluwensya ni Mama J sakin sa pageant tagal ko na din siya/silang sinusubaybayan…kaya sana in the future ma-recognize din ako as in ako.

OK, HOW DID YOU SUPPORT HER IN HER BB. PILIPINAS BID?

During her Binibining Pilipinas battle, full support lang. Aside from her trainings sa Aces meron kaming usapan na na oobserbahan ko sa kanya at ganun din naman sya every public appearances, tetext yan o tatawagan sakin, and she will ask me about her performance. At napaka vocal ko naman sa kanya. Pag sa tingin ko that she did good pupurihin ko siya, pero kung sa tingin ko di maganda sasabihin ko na pangit ung ginawa nya.

 

SHE WILL REPRESENT US IN MISS UNIVERSE.

BEING HER ORIGINAL HANDLER, SA TINGIN MO -–HOW FAR WILL SHE GO?

Lam mo dami na nagtatanong sakin nyan... pero sasagutin din kita ngaun kung anu sinagot ko sa kanila. Kasi the reason why they keep on asking me the same question kase during Binibini days na predict ko talaga that Ara will win,  this time not a runner up but a crown. Even Miss Universe 2012 nila Janine tama din predictions ko, almost... mali lang ako kay USA. Going back to Miss Universe 2013, di ko pa masabi how far can she go, kasi di ko pa nakikita ang total transformation nya in terms of make up and hair styling, with her improved catwalk at syempre ang pinaka-controversial, ang katawan nya. Kasi alam ko di papabayaan si Ara ng Aces lalo na ni Mama J. Maniwala kayo mawiwindang tayong lahat sa magigigng transformation ni Ara. But I believe regardless of the transformation lalaban yang si Ara....di yan papakabog.

WHO DO YOU THINK WILL BE HER STRONGEST RIVALS IN MISS U?

Strongest for me ay 3,, Japam o Israel at USA. At this time si USA at Israel pwede pa mapalitan pero si Japan, iba talaga pakiramdam ko.

AND LASTLY, ANO MESSAGE MO KAY ARA?

hhmm... Hi Ara alam mo naman na ang pangarap ko lang ay makapagpasok ng kandidata sa Binibining Pilipinas at tinupad mo yun. Di lang naging kandidata, nanalo ka pa as Miss Universe Philippines. Anytime soon you will be representing the Philippines for Miss Universe Pageant. Di ko na pinangarap un kase parang sobra na, pero eto ka lalaban ka at alam ko with all my heart, with your good heart palaban ka.. alam ko di ka papayag na wala kang makukuha na khit anong laban mo. Un lang at tulad ng parati ko sa yung sinasabi PARATI MONG GALINGAN kasi walang take 2 pag nangyari na. Good luck.. I love you!
