Charo Santos-Concio was first noticed as a beauty
queen when she was crowned Baron Travel Girl in 1976.
What do you remember most of your first trip abroad?
“I recall my trip to San Francisco as the Baron Travel
Girl where my uncle and I took the Bart Transit train at the Berkeley Station
headed for the city proper for our tour. I have always marveled at fast trains
and their modern coaches. When one stopped at our platform, I hurriedly boarded
the train. As it started to move, only then did I realize my uncle was not fast
enough to follow me and I found myself helplessly waving at him as he stood on
the platform. For a moment, I was bewildered and lost. But then I remembered
the directions he gave me. So I exited at the next station and waited for him.
The next train arrived and we were reunited and both had a good laugh at the
entire incident.”
What is the strangest thing you have done on a trip?
"I was in Zurich many years ago, on my world trip as the Baron Travel Girl. My
official chaperone excused herself for the day, so I decided to have lunch by
myself in the hotel restaurant. As I was finishing my meal, I noticed two men
looking intently at me, probably wondering what an Asian girl was up to, eating
all alone. After hurriedly settling my bill, I went to the magazine stand by
the lobby to purchase the latest issue of Time. It was then that the two
men approached me and propositioned that I join them on a trip to Paris. Taken
aback momentarily, but quickly regaining my composure, I thanked them for the
invitation, and with all the courage in my command to hide my nervousness, I
politely declined, giving the lame excuse my husband was meeting me shortly. Of
course, I suspect they did not believe me since I must have looked like a school
girl of 16; though I was all of 21 then; and may be too young to have a
husband. I guess they realized I was not the weekend girl they thought me for
and left me probably half-amused."
